The Downpipe: Where Stage 2 Actually Begins

The Cobb Stainless Steel Downpipe for the 2019-2021 Subaru WRX STI is the component that unlocks Stage 2 tuning on the VA STI. The factory downpipe houses a catalytic converter that restricts exhaust flow significantly at Stage 2 power levels — replacing it with the Cobb high-flow downpipe removes that restriction and allows the turbine to spin more freely, improving spool, reducing exhaust back pressure, and enabling the Accessport Stage 2 OTS map. Note: check emissions regulations in your area before installation.

Less Back Pressure, More Turbine Efficiency

The turbine side of the turbocharger on the VA STI is directly affected by what's downstream. High back pressure means the turbine has to work harder to push exhaust out — which means less energy available to spin the compressor wheel. The Cobb downpipe dramatically reduces this back pressure, improving turbine efficiency and enabling the turbocharger to build boost faster.

3-Inch Connection, Factory Flange Fitment

The Cobb downpipe uses the factory turbocharger outlet flange on the VA STI and a 3-inch pipe to the factory cat-back connection point. Installation is bolt-in at the factory locations — factory O2 sensor bung is retained for correct ECU operation. An Accessport tune is required after installation — the factory map is not calibrated for the increased exhaust flow.
