Below that threshold, oil circulates normally for fast warm-up -- only once temperatures rise does the cooler engage. This prevents over-cooling the oil on cold starts (which causes condensation and accelerates wear) while providing active cooling during sustained high-load operation.

Why Thermostatic Control Matters

A non-thermostatic oil cooler routes oil through the cooler regardless of temperature, which means the oil may never reach full operating temperature on short drives or in cold weather.
